Overview

The five-passenger Chevrolet Blazer sits between the Chevrolet Equinox and three-row Chevrolet Traverse in Chevy's expansive lineup of crossovers and SUVs. It boasts a sporty exterior and interior design inspired by the Chevrolet Camaro, which makes it the most visually interesting crossover in the midsize class. Unlike the conservative Honda Passport and Ford Edge, the Blazer has an unmistakable look. It also backs up its edgy styling with an engaging driving experience.

Spirited dynamics do come at a higher cost, as the base four-cylinder engine isn't exceptionally powerful or fuel-efficient. We like the optional turbocharged four-cylinder. But our favorite engine, the 308-horsepower V6, actually backs up the Blazer's sporty looks with a responsive feel and strong acceleration. Keep in mind that although the Blazer has a low base price, adding the options that make it so fun to drive quickly pushes it to near-luxury pricing territory.

What's New for 2021

Introduced as a new model in 2019, the Chevrolet Blazer gets a few small but important upgrades in 2021. Chevy adds the Safety Assist package to the LT, RS, and Premier trim levels. It includes automated emergency braking, front pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist and automatic high-beams. The Trailering package is optional on Blazers equipped with the V6 and all-wheel drive, increasing the crossover's tow rating from 1,500 pounds to 4,500 pounds.

The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer is available in six trim levels: L, LT, 2LT, 3LT, RS, and Premier. Starting at $29,995, the base L lacks comfort and convenience features, so the $33,495 LT is far more popular with its optional heated seats and active safety systems.

The $34,295 Blazer 2LT would be our pick, as it's the least expensive trim that can be equipped with the V6 engine and all-wheel-drive system. It includes some standard safety systems, but buyers will still need to pay extra for comfort features such as heated seats.

Priced at $41,995, the RS is expensive, but it comes with a retuned suspension for better handling and more aggressive exterior trim for an even sportier look. An RS with the V6 and all-wheel drive is truly fun to drive. The Blazer's starting price is competitive in its class, but SUVs such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Honda Passport offer more power and features for less money.

Engine and Performance

The Chevrolet Blazer comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a responsive nine-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive only. Rated at 193 horsepower, the four-cylinder engine is sufficient in day-to-day driving, but it lacks the punch implied by the Blazer's sporty design. We recommend stepping up to at least the optional 230-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, or better yet, the 308-hp 3.6-liter V6. Both are smoother engines and can be coupled with all-wheel drive. Either of these engines makes the Blazer more enjoyable to drive than most crossovers in this class, as it has accurate steering, solid braking performance, and athletic handling. Unlike the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Honda Passport, the Blazer isn't equipped for off-road adventures even with all-wheel drive. Instead, it excels on the highway and in the city, where it's exceptionally maneuverable and easy to park.

Fuel Economy

The Chevrolet Blazer's fuel economy is about average for this class; however, the efficiency numbers for each engine are surprising. With the base four-cylinder engine, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates the Blazer's fuel economy at 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Though significantly more powerful, the optional turbocharged engine earns better mileage, with estimates of 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. And the even more potent V6 isn't far behind with EPA estimates of 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. When equipped with all-wheel drive, those numbers drop slightly, which is normal for crossovers and SUVs. For the highest fuel economy in this class, check out the Toyota Venza, which is rated 40 mpg city and 37 mpg highway.

Interior

The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer's interior design is unlike Chevy's other family-haulers. Inspired by the Chevrolet Camaro, the Blazer's dashboard is uniquely sporty and visually expressive, which adds to its youthful vibe. The Blazer doesn't feel like a typical family car, yet all the controls are intuitive and well laid out. We especially like the clever, round air vents that twist to adjust the airflow. The lower-priced Blazers have an abundance of hard plastic, but the higher-trim models offer leather upholstery and upscale materials.

The Blazer's front seats are big and comfortable. There's also ample room in the second row for passengers and to stash personal belongings. Behind the backseat, there's 31 cubic feet of cargo space, which is just average for this class. Fold down the SUV's rear seat and the space doubles to 64 cubic feet. That's still less than you find in a Honda Passport or Nissan Murano.

Infotainment & Connectivity

Targeting youthful buyers, Chevy didn't skimp on the Blazer's infotainment system. The standard 8-inch touchscreen is well-placed and responds quickly to touch. Every Blazer also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is easy to use with simple menus and attractive graphics. Four USB ports are also standard while an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, and wireless phone charging are available. Chevy also offers an eight-speaker Bose audio system as an upgrade, but we didn't find its sound quality too exceptional, though.

Safety

The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer has solid safety ratings across the board. It earned a five-star crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and received the highest possible scores in six crash tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It missed the IIHS Top Safety Pick designation because of marginal scores for the performance of its headlights and the accessibility of its child-seat anchors.

Note that most high-tech driver assistance systems cost extra. Only the RS and Premier trim levels have all the goodies standard. However, Chevy did add the Safety Assist package to the higher-grade LT models and all RS and Premier trim levels. The package includes automated emergency braking, front pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beams. Adaptive cruise control is also available.

It's especially satisfying to drive when equipped with the optional V6 engine. The Blazer is also spacious and offers enough cargo space for most small families. If you need maximum cargo space or mileage, there are better options such as the stylish Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport or the fuel-efficient Toyota Venza. To get a sporty feel and some off-road ability, the Honda Passport offers a good combination of the two.
