Overview

Available with front- or all-wheel drive and with gas or gas-electric hybrid power, the 2021 CR-V is Honda's best-selling model. It's also the fifth best-selling vehicle — car, truck, or SUV — in the U.S. Along with the Toyota RAV4, it's a top-selling entry in the fast-expanding compact-SUV segment. The current fifth-generation Honda CR-V was introduced in 2017 and is expected to be replaced by an all-new version for the 2022 model year.

The CR-V is a sensible choice for smart buyers. Its appeal lies in its clean and understated design, peppy and fuel-efficient powertrain, agreeable ride, handling balance, and long list of standard features. And, yes, the Subaru Forester does boast off-road chops and the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sorento high-tech infotainment and extensive driver-assistive content. But what the CR-V does offer is a likable balance of comfort, fuel efficiency, and utility at an attractive price point.

What's New for 2021

The addition of a just-over-base SE trim is the only significant change to the 2021 Honda CR-V.

Trims and Pricing

The 2021 Honda CR-V comes in five gas-powered models: LX, SE, EX, EX-L, and Touring. Three gas-electric hybrid models are also available: Hybrid EX, Hybrid EX-L, and Hybrid Touring. All-wheel drive is standard with Hybrid models and is a $1,500 upcharge on gas-powered ones. The EX is the popular trim and it's also our pick for best value.

LX

The base LX trim is priced at $26,525 (with a $1,175 destination fee). Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, keyless entry, steering wheel controls, a six-way adjustable driver's seat, and a four-speaker audio system with Bluetooth connectivity.

SE

Stepping up to the Special Edition ($27,725) adds remote start, heated side mirrors, push-button start, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a more powerful six-speaker audio system, and an upgraded technology interface with a 7-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

EX

Priced at $29,035, the EX trim is our pick for the best value since it's equipped with everything most buyers want. In addition to the features on the Special Edition, the EX includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a power-adjustable driver's seat, moonroof, cargo cover, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring, rear USB ports, and XM satellite radio.

EX-L

Just above the EX sits the $31,625 EX-L, which is furnished with leather seating, leather trim for the steering wheel and shift lever, a power-adjustable passenger seat, an eight-speaker audio system, and a power liftgate.

Hybrid EX

Most of the equipment on the Hybrid EX ($31,735) is similar to the gas-only EX, except for the addition of LED headlights, a two-position seat memory for the driver, and an eight-speaker audio system with XM satellite radio.

Hybrid EX-L

The hybrid version of the EX-L trim ($34,375) has everything featured in the standard EX-L as well as LED headlights, a heated steering wheel, a programmable garage door opener, and ambient interior lighting.

Honda CR-V Touring

The loaded Touring trim ($34,825) comes with 19-inch wheels, a premium nine-speaker audio system, onboard navigation, rain-sensing wipers, a hands-free power liftgate, roof rails, chrome exhaust tips, and a wireless phone charging pad.

Honda CR-V Hybrid Touring

In addition to all the equipment on the standard Touring trim, the Hybrid Touring ($37,525) adds front and rear parking sensors.

Engine and Performance

Gas-powered CR-Vs roll with a perky 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo teamed with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The 1.5-liter turbo runs on regular unleaded fuel and develops 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque over a broad range from 2,000 to 5,000 rpm. Honda's CVT is one of the more responsive in the segment. While it's no hot rod, the gas-powered CR-V has ample power to slip into gaps in traffic, merge onto freeways, and overtake slower traffic. It can hit 60 mph from rest in about 7.5 seconds.

The CR-V Hybrid shares its 2.0-liter gas engine and hybrid-electric drive motor with the Honda Accord. Total system output is 212 horsepower. Power delivery is smooth and seamless with 0-60 mph times also in the 7.5-second range. All-wheel drive is standard with all CR-V Hybrid models.

There are other compact SUVs, such as the Volkswagen Tiguan and Mazda CX-5, that offer a sportier driving experience. But for the everyday commute, few can match the Honda CR-V's likable blend of refined ride comfort, confidence-inspiring brakes, and sharp steering. From the nicely appointed cabin to the user-friendly driving dynamics, the Honda CR-V drives more like a well-sorted Accord sedan than a rough-and-ready off-road SUV.

Fuel Economy

Both 2021 CR-V powertrains offer good fuel economy. In combined city/highway driving, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the non-hybrid CR-V's base 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo at 29-30 mpg. That's slightly better than the combined 28-30 mpg of the gas-powered Toyota RAV4's base 2.5-liter four-cylinder. For hybrid models, the order flips with the 2.0-liter gas-electric CR-V Hybrid netting a 38 EPA combined mpg rating, and the 2.5-liter RAV4 Hybrid outdoing it with a 40 combined mpg rating.

Interior

Despite a design that's in its fifth model year, the 2021 CR-V's cabin remains one of the best in the segment. Interior trim is attractive. The nicely sculpted front buckets are comfortable and supportive. They're cloth-covered in the LX, SE, and EX trims and leather-clad in the EX-L and Touring. There's plenty of space with the rear bench seat offering true three-across seating for adults. Rear-seat legroom is over 2 inches more commodious than in the RAV4. The generously sized center console, door pockets, and glove box can easily accommodate small items and trip detritus. Active noise cancellation on all CR-V models helps tame unwanted engine and road noise inside as well.

The CR-V has class-leading cargo space with 39.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 75.8 with the rear seat folded flat. That's nearly as much space as in the much larger midsize Honda Passport. Due to the large underfloor lithium-ion battery, hybrid variants of the CR-V have about 6-7 cubic feet less space than gas versions. Access is via a power-operated liftgate on EX-L models or a hands-free one with Touring trims.

One area for improvement is in outward visibility. The CR-V's thick windshield pillars, as well as tall hood and front fenders, restrict visibility to the front and sides. Upper trims with power seat height adjustment should help in this area. However, smaller-statured shoppers would be well advised to take the CR-V for a test drive before buying.

Infotainment and Connectivity

One area where the current CR-V shows its age is infotainment. Although Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard in all but the base LX trim in the CR-V, competitors such as the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage now feature standard wireless versions of the popular cellphone mirroring tech that eliminates USB cable clutter. There are two touchscreen options, measuring a diminutive 5 inches in the base LX and 7 inches in higher trims. They're both smaller than standard offerings in competitors, such as the Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson. A volume knob was added for the CR-V two years ago. But the Honda system still lacks a tuning knob, and overall is more menu-intensive and slower-operating than those in many other compact SUVs. The CR-V also lacks in-vehicle Wi-Fi.

Niceties such as satellite-linked navigation, nine-speaker premium audio, and a wireless charger are only available in the top Touring trims.

Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the 2021 Honda CR-V a full five out of five stars in its testing. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named the Honda CR-V a 2021 Top Safety Pick with "Good" ratings in all crashworthiness categories.

Recently updated competitors, such as the Nissan Rogue and [Hyundai Tucson](/hyundai/tucson/], now offer more safety tech with features such as road sign assist, a driver attention monitor, a surround-view monitor, and rear-seat monitor. Yet, the current CR-V remains relevant with its standard Honda Sensing features. In addition to a multi-angle backup camera, every 2021 CR-V is equipped with forward-collision warning, auto emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and auto high beams. All but the LX and SE also receive blind-spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring systems.

Honda CR-V vs. the Competition

Since its introduction more than two decades ago, the Honda CR-V has been a top seller among compact SUVs. Entering its final year before a complete makeover for 2022, the current CR-V has increased competition from the all-new Nissan Rogue, Hyundai Tucson, and Volkswagen Tiguan. All now offer more advanced infotainment and driver-assistive technology than the CR-V. The chief CR-V competitor is the Toyota RAV4, which, in addition to besting the compact Honda SUV in connectivity features, possesses a more rugged, off-road-ready appearance favored by some buyers. However, the CR-V still ranks as one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs in the compact class. It continues to offer a generous list of standard comfort and convenience features. And it is one of the best in terms of passenger and cargo space, ride comfort, and handling precision.

2021 Honda CR-V FAQs

The Honda CR-V is one of the benchmarks of the compact SUV class, making it an excellent choice for almost anyone. Now offered in several hybrid trims, the Honda CR-V is a great crossover to consider. The new CR-V features Honda’s legendary engineering, a reputation for reliability, and an economical four-cylinder engine. Families will appreciate the spacious cabin, large cargo area ready to handle strollers and groceries, and a suite of driver-assistance systems. The CR-V isn’t the sportiest crossover in its category. Still, it is certainly one of the most practical and easy to drive.

While styling and driving impressions are subjective, standard content between the two differs between the base vehicles siding more with the Honda CR-V. That said, the Toyota RAV4 was redesigned in 2019, while the Honda CR-V was last redesigned in 2017, making the RAV4 feel more modern.

The Honda CR-V starts at just over $25,000 for the LX trim that features the complete Honda Sensing safety package. For the fully-loaded Touring trim, look to pay closer to $33,000 for luxury features like 19-inch alloy wheels, a heated leather steering wheel, and wireless phone charging.

The CR-V in Honda CR-V stands for “Compact Recreational Vehicle.” The Japanese automaker wanted to communicate the SUV’s strengths as an all-around family vehicle. The latest Honda CR-V comes with many impressive highlights to make life easier for owners. All-wheel drive is offered for extra traction in bad weather, while advanced safety tech comes standard. The CR-V’s roomy interior is adaptable for holding passengers or cargo. Meanwhile, Honda gave its compact SUV car-like handling and competitive fuel economy to round out its convenient nature.

The Starting Market Average is a proprietary mathematical calculation based on actual recent transactions. It provides a statistically accurate understanding of what other buyers are paying for the least expensive configuration of this vehicle. Adjustments to the calculation beyond make, model, and trim are normalized based on detailed, anonymized transaction information. This accounts for the fact that most or all recently-sold vehicles included different option combinations. The data underlying the Starting Market Average calculation are filtered for extreme outliers and subjected to a weighted averaging process that considers factors such as the recency of transactions and the timing of data lags. In certain instances, the calculated result is adjusted to take account of abrupt changes in the market that may not yet be fully reflected by recent transaction prices. In all cases where the Starting Market Average is shown there is sufficient sample size and transaction detail to be statistically reliable.
