Overview

The Grand Cherokee is widely acknowledged to be the best off-roader among both midsize and full-size SUVs. With its unique Jeep persona and characteristics, it commands a premium price. The largest vehicle in Jeep's SUV lineup, the Grand Cherokee sits at the smaller end of the midsize SUV segment. The five-passenger model is 9 inches shorter than the Ford Explorer.

Based on its size, the Grand Cherokee is competitive with two-row midsize SUVs such as the Ford Edge and Nissan Murano. However, those vehicles have virtually no off-road credentials. What's New for 2021

The new three-row 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is available in four different trims: Laredo, Limited, Overland and Summit. Rear-drive is standard and four different four-wheel-drive systems are offered.

The Laredo comes well-equipped at $34,290 (including a $1,495 delivery fee). Its array of standard features includes push-button start, keyless entry, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and dual-zone automatic climate control. If you don't mind cloth seats, the Laredo trim is our pick for the best combination of value and performance. It also offers a wide range of options, so there's plenty of ways to upgrade the specific areas that are most important to you. The primary difference between Laredo X and Laredo E is the wheel size (X rides on 20” while E has 18”).

The Limited adds genuine leather upholstery and a sunroof, while the Overland trim gets ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, HID headlights with automatic high beams, air suspension, and 20-inch wheels.

The Grand Cherokee's standard engine is a time-tested 295-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. Unlike most other midsize SUVs (except for the Dodge Durango), the Grand Cherokee offers a string of V8 engines. A 360-hp 5.7-liter V8 is also widely available across the trim levels as an option. Jeep refers to the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk as the quickest and most powerful SUV ever. Its 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine delivers 707 hp and a claimed 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds. Most Grand Cherokee buyers will never need that level of performance, but they will be satisfied by the smooth power delivery of the V6 and 5.7-liter V8s engines.

The Grand Cherokee also shines off road. Giving its buyers the choice of four sophisticated four-wheel-drive systems and multiple drive modes, the Grand Cherokee lives up to its go-anywhere reputation. Jeep's Selec-Speed Control enables drivers to control the Grand Cherokee's speed up and down steep grades with steering-wheel paddle shifters (and without the need for throttle or brake input). The Grand Cherokee's on-road manners aren't always as refined as its competitors, but drivers will find the Jeep comfortable enough to use daily.

Fuel Economy

Whether you choose the off-road-oriented versions or the street-performance models, the Grand Cherokee does not offer high fuel economy numbers. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the 3.6-liter V6 base Grand Cherokee delivers an estimated 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. A 5.7-liter V8-equipped 4x4 Grand Cherokee gets 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. The high-horsepower Trackhawk delivers 11 mpg city/17 mpg highway according to the EPA. Owners can expect a V6-equipped Grand Cherokee to earn about 21 mpg in all-around driving, compared to 24 mpg for the Ford Explorer with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine.

With an overall length of 189.8 inches and width of 76.5 inches, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is among the smallest crossovers in the midsize class. If you need the extra space, the new Grand Cherokee L bridges that gap with additional interior space for passengers and gear. In either standard or L versions, the Grand Cherokee will easily carry a family of four: giving more than ample rear headroom/legroom for tall adults and enough luggage space for family vacations. Its supportive seats remain comfortable even after a day's drive. On the Limited trim, the perforated Nappa leather seats and smooth Nappa leather bolsters are particularly handsome.

While some SUVs in this class offer significantly more cargo space than the standard Grand Cherokee, the Grand Cherokee L overcomes that issue. Its cargo area is on par with the Volkswagen Atlas and Honda Pilot. The five-passenger Grand Cherokee's 36.3 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seat will be sufficient for most families. Infotainment & Connectivity

Jeep's Uconnect 4 infotainment management system has set the standard in the industry for years. With easy-to-read display screens, the Grand Cherokee's system is intuitive and seamlessly integrates with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Two USB ports and a 7-inch touchscreen are standard on the lowest trim, and a larger 8.4-inch display is standard on the other five-passenger Grand Cherokee models. The newer Uconnect 5 NAV with a 10.1-inch display is available on the Grand Cherokee L. Navigation and both Alpine and Harmon Kardon premium audio systems are available. We have to say, the Harmon Kardon unit is truly outstanding. A 10-inch head-up display is offered on the Grand Cherokee L. One notable item that's missing is onboard Wi-Fi, a feature that's available on many of the Grand Cherokee's competitors such as the Hyundai Palisade.

Safety

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is noted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for its overall safety. NHTSA gives the four-wheel-drive versions a five-star safety rating -- its highest honor -- and rear-drive versions get four stars. However, the Grand Cherokee was not chosen by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety as a Top Safety Pick.
