Pros

Classic MINI style in drop-top form; Upscale interior appointments; Sporty driving character; Great fuel economy

Cons

Pricey options raise the price fast; Some vibration over uneven roads; Small trunk

Verdict

MINI is best known for its lovable Cooper hatchback, but the inimitable British brand also offers a drop-top version called the MINI Convertible, which blends the original car’s lively character with all the sun-kissed freedom a reclining roof provides. Drivers can select from three engines, and a manual transmission is available, making the soft-top as fun to drive on twisty mountain roads as it is cruising along the coast.

Overview

MINI is a car brand based on the joy of driving, and the Convertible adds an extra serving of delight to any occasion. Its soft-top drops at the push of a button, opening up the views from the comfort of MINI’s luxurious interior. There is seating for four people, though the back is best for kids, and cargo space is minimal.

It may not be the most practical family car, but the Convertible makes up for it with an agile size and great fuel economy. Some tech features are absent, like Android Auto, and customers need to spend extra to get certain driver-assistance tech. Yet overall, MINI’s soft-top is chock full of personality, providing premium appeal and unbeatable views in a pint-sized package.

Trims and Pricing

MINI keeps the buying process simple, offering the Convertible in three trim levels: Cooper, S, and John Cooper Works.

Pricing for the base Cooper trim starts at about $28,000. For that price, shoppers get tons of retro British charm and a manual transmission. It’s equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels, a forward-collision mitigation system, lane-departure warning, parking sensors, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, leatherette seats, keyless entry/start, air conditioning, a 6-speaker sound system, and an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth.

Get the midrange S trim for a mix of performance and value, priced from around $32,000. It gets a more potent motor, 16-inch wheels, and power-adjustable sport seats.

The top-of-the-range John Cooper Works comes with even more power and driving fun for its $39,000 MSRP. Buyers get 17-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, LED exterior lighting, leatherette and cloth seating, and exclusive design cues.

Shoppers can customize their MINI in a range of paint colors and interior trim combinations. Tech options include Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, adaptive cruise control, and navigation. Few cars on the road can match the MINI Convertible for sheer personality, and that can be enhanced with Union Jack mirror caps, racing stripes, and more.

Engine and Performance

MINI offers three trim levels, and each brings a unique engine and distinct driving character. The base Cooper employs a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbo making 134 hp. It’s not the quickest powertrain in its class, but MINI’s 6-speed manual transmission rows gears effectively, giving the Convertible a sporty attitude and great driver control. Fuel economy is stellar, at 27 mpg in the city and 37 mpg highway.

Moving up to the S trim beefs up the MINI’s power with its 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo. It produces 189 hp, offering a superb compromise between speed and economy, with 23/33 mpg city/highway.

The John Cooper Works offers even more power without diminishing fuel efficiency. Its 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo makes 228 hp, giving the MINI quick acceleration that’s on par with many sports cars. Still, it returns an impressive 24/33 mpg city/highway. Unlike the other trims, the JCW comes standard with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Interior

Like other MINI’s, the Convertible offers all of the British style and luxury one could expect in a likably compact package. The front seats are nicely bolstered for a sporty feel and good support in mixed driving, and the upper trim levels include sport seats. The dashboard has a timeless appeal, thanks to its rounded air vents and infotainment center. Aero-style toggle switches provide extra flair, with a red start/stop switch at the ready.

Front-seat room is superb, with good space for both passengers to sit comfortably for long spans. Dropping the electric top is easy, though it takes longer than manually operated competitors. Those sitting in the back get just 30.9 inches of legroom, meaning taller adults won’t be comfortable for long. The back seats can be used as extra storage, which is good because the MINI’s trunk is on the small side.

The Starting Market Average is a proprietary mathematical calculation based on actual recent transactions. It provides a statistically accurate understanding of what other buyers are paying for the least expensive configuration of this vehicle. Adjustments to the calculation beyond make, model, and trim are normalized based on detailed, anonymized transaction information. This accounts for the fact that most or all recently-sold vehicles included different option combinations. The data underlying the Starting Market Average calculation are filtered for extreme outliers and subjected to a weighted averaging process that considers factors such as the recency of transactions and the timing of data lags. In certain instances, the calculated result is adjusted to take account of abrupt changes in the market that may not yet be fully reflected by recent transaction prices. In all cases where the Starting Market Average is shown there is sufficient sample size and transaction detail to be statistically reliable.
